Saying Good-bye to Alma Mater Again

Within a few days, I will move out of campus and rent an apartment. I got my master's and bachelor's degree from the same university, between which I worked for a year. Therefore, it is the second time that I left my Alma Mater, which reminds me of a very famous Chinese poem, written by a distinguished Chinese poet for his Alma Mater. I had thought of adapting the poem, but I fear that I might spoil it, therefore I cite the poem here:

Saying Good-bye to Cambridge Again

by Xu Zhimo

Very quietly I take my leave

As quietly as I came here;

Quietly I wave good-bye

To the rosy clouds in the western sky.

The golden willows by the riverside

Are young brides in the setting sun;

Their reflections on the shimmering waves

Always linger in the depth of my heart.

The floating heart growing in the sludge

Sways leisurely under the water;

In the gentle waves of Cambridge

I would be a water plant!

That pool under the shade of elm trees

Holds not water but the rainbow from the sky;

Shattered to pieces among the duckweeds

Is the sediment of a rainbow-like dream?

To seek a dream? Just to pole a boat upstream

To where the green grass is more verdant;

Or to have the boat fully loaded with starlight

And sing aloud in the splendor of starlight.

But I cannot sing aloud

Quietness is my farewell music;

Even summer insects heap silence for me

Silent is Cambridge tonight!

Very quietly I take my leave

As quietly as I came here;

Gently I flick my sleeves

Not even a wisp of cloud will I bring away

Here are some pictures of our university. The former two are the older campus, and the latter two are the newer campus, which are obviously of different styles.

I think I will add something the day I leave.

On the morning of the day before yesterday, I got up early and went to my supervisor's office. It was before 8 o'clock and he didn't come. I waited for a few minutes, left my thesis on his desk and left. I should have handed it in long before, but this is the final version. Probably I won't edit it or even read it for a very long time in the future. I had planned to talk with him for a while, but I guessed I'd better save that for a telephone conversation, as I had to go to work. It was Friday!

Yesterday, I travelled for an hour and a half to see an apartment. I do not know whether it is a fixer-upper or a burner-downer. It is old, badly-furnished, spacious, quite and cheap. So there are both pros and cons. Finally I decided to rent it, as I am looking for an apartment that is safe, clean, quiet, cheap and with convenient transportation. It has met my requirements. I won't stay there alone. A university student who is doing internship at the moment will share the apartment with me.

On my way back, I took out my cell phone and gave a call to my supervisor. He seemed a bit tired, and he told me that he had just been back from Britain two days before. He asked me how I was doing and I told him everything went well. He said that, my top priority should be to buy an apartment as soon as I have enough money. Last month the housing price rose again. Housing price in Shanghai will be the topic of my next blog entry. :good:

I will move out of campus this weekend, where I have stayed for about seven years. I believe I will come up with more, as the leaving data draws closer.

Finally moved in. Everything is OK. It is a very good place, with good transportation, supermarkets, banks, hair salons, airline and train ticket booking offices, post office, etc. Internet access has been applied for but those guys are very insufficient, I have to admit. There are many inconveniences without the Internet access, and being unable to post here is one of them. :good:

There are many gardenias in the communities and I can feel the fragrance as I walk. I remember in childhood many girls buy gardenias and put them in their hairs. The classroom brims with fragrance. And I think of a Chinese song, the Chinese version is sung by a boy, and English version by a girl.

Gardenia in Blossom

Gardenia in Blossom

So beautiful so white

We'll be apart in such a sweet season

Don't be so shy flowery baby

Your mild fragrance's everywhere around me

Gardenia in blossom

So lovely so nice

Never leave me in such a beautiful season

Wave to happiness and sadness

Don't be so forgetful, remember we were so young

Gardenia in blossom

Gardenia in blossom

Like a sweet dream

Bless him in my heart

Gardenia in blossom

Gardenia in blossom

Remember the youth

And purest love

Now I have Internet access and telephone installed in the apartment. Life has returned to normal.

Time dilutes everything, the memories about university life are no exception. So is friendship between the classmates.

The whole entry is a bit sentimental.

---The End---
